AZ Pharmacy Alliance Awards Rep. Barto

HB 2164, when enacted at the end of September, will allow certified pharmacists to administer immunizations to adults without a prescription.   And part of HB 2564, the Abortion Consent Act, updates important rights of conscience provisions concerning pharmacists and physicians who object to prescribing medications that cause abortion.  Both bills enhance and support the pharmacy profession.

Following the recommendations of the Legislature’s Committee of Reference in 2008, I sponsored legislation to enhance pharmacists’ role in meeting the practical needs of the community.  The ability to access immunizations from their pharmacist will give consumers more choice and save them time and money since many primary care physicians often do not stock or bill Medicare for many vaccines.  Here are excerpts from the award letter…
