Common Core – Should we be concerned?

April 13, 2014 by

Common Core standards are being implemented in Arizona.  In Arizona, they are called Arizona’s College and Career Ready Standards.  And yes, Parents, educators and Legislators ARE concerned and for good reason.  And what about Arizona’s sudden withdrawal from PARCC?  Check out this article and these links to a Common Core Q and A.

Are the CC standards internationally benchmarked?  Who is behind the CC?  Why did the only educators on the 30 member Validation Committee refuse to sign off on the CC standards?  Get up to speed – Watch the recently released documentary, “Building the Machine”

Texas opted out of the Common Core standards. Oklahoma’s Governor Mary Fallon just signed a bill opting out, as well.  What are Arizona Legislators doingSen. Chester Crandell proposed a bill allowing Arizona school districts to choose to implement CC standards or alternative high standards.  The bill – SB 1395 – failed in the Senate 12-17.  SB 1310 – prohibiting CC standards in Arizona and  SB 1396 – requiring Arizona to withdraw from the PARCC consortium and prohibiting implementation of the PARCC assessment – also failed in the Senate.

Bottom line:  Legislators were unsuccessful  this session in giving parents a say in regards to CC in Arizona.   For more information – Watch this symposium on the Common Core education standards held at the State Senate on October 30th, 2013.
