FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Sen. Barto to speak at National Summit on Health Privacy

(Phoenix, State Capitol) —- Sen. Nancy Barto will be one of the featured speakers at a national summit focused on health privacy. Sen. Barto will speak at the 2011 Summit on Health Privacy in Washington, D.C. on Monday, June 13. Her presentation will be part of a discussion on Privacy Protection in the Digital Era.

Sen. Barto is the Chair of the Senate Committee on Healthcare and Medical Liability Reform. She has successfully sponsored major health care reforms, focusing on increasing affordable health insurance options.

“When their medical records are kept in electronic systems, 2010 Zogby polling shows 91% of patients would want to decide which individuals could see and use them,” says Sen. Barto. “With health care providers taking advantage of the millions of dollars in stimulus funding to get on board the electronic medical records train, are we moving too quickly without ensuring health information will be protected? Cyber-theft, near daily security breaches, selling of patient data, patient consent: these concerns have yet to be addressed. What consumers don’t know about EMRs really can hurt them.”

The 2011 Summit on Health Privacy will focus on real world health privacy cases. Panelists will cover strategies for delivering responsible, realistic privacy solutions for America’s health care system. Experts from law, academia and research, consumer and privacy advocacy organizations, health professions, providers and health plans, and the health IT industry worked together to define the content and format of the Summit. Participants will also discuss next steps, which may include developing an interdisciplinary research agenda, identifying principles and best practices for policymakers and industry; launching working groups to tackle specific and contentious issues and planning a high level political summit on Health Privacy.
